Discover Hunan Chinese Restaurant

If you’re driving along 306 E Laurel Ave, Foley, AL 36535, United States, it’s easy to miss the modest storefront at first glance. Yet once you step inside Hunan Chinese Restaurant, the warm aroma of garlic, ginger, and sizzling wok oil immediately pulls you in. I’ve visited several times over the past year, both for quick lunches and relaxed family dinners, and each visit has delivered a consistently satisfying experience.

The menu is extensive without feeling overwhelming. You’ll find classic Chinese-American favorites like General Tso’s chicken, sweet and sour pork, and beef with broccoli, alongside more traditional Hunan-style dishes known for their bold heat and layered spices. Hunan cuisine, according to culinary research published by institutions like the China Cuisine Association, is famous for its liberal use of chili peppers, fermented soybeans, and garlic. You can taste that authenticity here, especially in dishes like the Hunan beef, which arrives steaming hot with crisp vegetables and a rich, savory sauce that balances spice and depth rather than just heat.

On my last visit, I ordered the shrimp fried rice and a side of egg rolls. The rice had that slightly smoky flavor known as wok hei, a hallmark of high-heat stir-frying. Achieving that flavor requires precise timing and temperature control, something chefs train for over years. It’s not just tossing ingredients in a pan; it’s about cooking in rapid bursts so the grains stay separate and fluffy. The egg rolls were crisp on the outside, filled generously with cabbage and seasoned pork, and served with a tangy dipping sauce that complemented rather than overpowered.

One thing that stands out in local reviews is portion size. Many diners mention that a single entrée can easily feed two people. In my experience, that’s accurate. When I ordered the sesame chicken combo for lunch, it came with fried rice and a choice of soup. The hot and sour soup, in particular, impressed me with its balance-tangy vinegar notes, subtle chili heat, and silky strands of egg throughout. Nutrition experts often note that soups like hot and sour can be lower in calories while still feeling filling, which makes it a smart starter if you’re watching your intake without sacrificing flavor.

Service here is friendly and efficient. Orders are taken promptly, and takeout is packaged carefully to prevent spills. I once placed a large family order during a busy Friday evening. Even with a packed dining area, the staff had everything ready within the quoted time. That level of organization speaks to solid kitchen workflow and clear communication between front-of-house and back-of-house teams.

Cleanliness is another reassuring factor. The dining area is simple but tidy, with neatly arranged tables and well-maintained restrooms. The importance of restaurant hygiene has been emphasized repeatedly by organizations like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which outlines strict food safety guidelines. While I don’t have access to their inspection reports, the visible attention to cleanliness during my visits has always been comforting.

The location in Foley makes it convenient for both locals and visitors exploring Baldwin County. Whether you’re stopping by after shopping or picking up dinner on the way home, the accessibility adds to its appeal. Parking is straightforward, and the casual setting makes it suitable for families, couples, or solo diners.

What keeps me coming back, though, is the consistency. In the restaurant industry, consistency is often cited by hospitality experts as the key to long-term success. A dish should taste the same on your fifth visit as it did on your first. Here, the flavors remain steady, the portions generous, and the service dependable. While it may not offer ultra-modern décor or experimental fusion plates, it excels at delivering flavorful, comforting Chinese cuisine in a welcoming environment.

For anyone craving spicy Hunan specialties, classic fried rice, or reliable takeout in Foley, this spot on Laurel Avenue continues to earn its place among the area’s go-to Chinese restaurants.

  • I always enjoy coming here for the shrimp fried rice and opening up a few packs of pokemon! Wonderful food and excellent customer service everyone is so kind and helpful. And the salted caramel soft serve ice cream is a must!

  • Area is always clean. Everyone is always nice and helpful. Food is good off the buffet or if you order a dish not on the buffet. I have an allergy to all beans and they are always accommodating and the food and vegetables are soooo good in curry sauce, white sauce or clear sauce. This rest has become our go to restaurant because of the fresh vegetables, egg drop soup and jasmine rice. The bomb.

  • Nice, quiet dinner. Extremely kind staff. Went here for dinner. Seated instantly. This is a great, local Chinese buffet, that is limited, but keeps the buffet fresh. I gotta say, the shrimp was great and the rest of the buffet is very good. Most bang for the buck in South Baldwin county! You won't go without enjoying taste or being hungry from this place and enjoy the relaxed experience.

  • This is my new favorite Chinese Restaurant. I stopped for a to-go order. They were very helpful when I wanted to know what chicken dishes do not have breaded chicken. They had several options. Everything was delicious. I will definitely come back.

  • This restaurant is a couple of blocks from our home, but we had never eaten there until a month ago. We have eaten there twice more since then. It is more or less standard Chinese buffet cuisine, exactly as you want it, with plenty of desserts and ice cream to top it off. The food tastes good, and the tables are clean, and the staff are friendly. What else do you need

  • Best keep secret in Foley. Consistently great! I’ve been eating here for 33 years. Discovered it the night before my oldest son was born. They have a very popular buffet but TRY the menu items, they’re amazing! I get take out at least 2x a month. More than you can eat and worth 2 x what you’ll pay, eat for days!! We had: Moo Goo Gai Pan, Fried Boneless Chicken w/ Chinese Vegetables, Shrimp fried Rice, 6 egg rolls $38 w tax. Love this place and their people!! Thanks Yan!! The photos are what’s leftover after 2 people have already eaten. Enjoy!
